The Surgical Technician functions as a key member of the surgical team, collaborating with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff to deliver patient care across all phases of surgery. This role primarily involves acting as the main scrub person responsible for managing the instruments, supplies, and equipment needed during the surgical procedure.
A certificate or degree from an accredited OR Technology school and current BLS certification are mandatory requirements for this position. Previous scrub experience of 0-2 years is preferred, and specific state legislation dictates certification maintenance or qualifying military/employment history.
Staff employed to practice surgical technology by the healthcare facility two years before effective date of the law are grandfathered and therefore not required to have certification. New graduates of a program sponsored by nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for six months prior to certification but must be certified within six months of program completion.
