The Neurodiagnostic Technologist Level 1 performs standard and complex neurodiagnostic procedures, including routine and video EEGs and Evoked Potentials, under moderate supervision. Responsibilities also involve electrode placement, maintaining equipment, completing necessary documentation, and providing supportive patient care during emergencies like seizures.
Required qualifications include a High School diploma or GED equivalent, the ability to follow verbal instructions, effective verbal and written communication skills, and working knowledge of computer applications like Microsoft or Google productivity suites. Eligibility for ABRET registration and an AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification are also mandatory.
A day in the life of a Neurodiagnostic Tech Level 1 at Hackensack Meridian Health includes: Electrode Placement 1. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp. 2. Routinely achieves impedance levels below 10k ohms. Routine EEGs 3. Performs standard EEG recordings according to the departmental protocols including awake and asleep, bedside, isolation, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, etc. 4. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp. 5. Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on the history, clinical observations, and EEG findings. 6. Compiles data on patient's neurologic status and clinical history which may be pertinent to interpretation of the Neurodiagnostic procedure from the chart, patient or family, etc. 7. Completes both technical and professional bills upon completion of study and enters billing number in the record. 8. Documents completion of study in the electronic log. Video EEGs 9. Performs standard Video EEG Long Term Monitoring recording according to the department protocols. 10. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp. 11. Maintain and replace electrodes as needed to maintain the integrity of the EEG recordings. 12. Collects patient information pertinent to the interpretation of these tests and employs proper procedures for testing. 13. Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on the history, clinical observations, and EEG findings. 14. Compiles data on patient's neurologic status and clinical history which may be pertinent to interpretation of the Neurodiagnostic procedure from the chart, patient or family, etc. 15. Completes both technical bills upon completion of study and enters billing number in the record. 16. Documents completion of study in the electronic log. Evoked Potentials 17. Performs standard Visual Evoked Potentials, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials, and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials according to ACNS guidelines. 18. Ensures technical quality of recordings by making adjustments as necessary. Support During Seizures 19. Provides supportive patient care and detailed observations of clinical manifestations during seizure and other patient emergency situations. 20. Assesses patient's memory, language, and patient's ability to follow commands during patient events. Place call to EMS in the event of an external medical emergency. Notifies interpreting physicians in the event the patient has a seizure during recording. Customer/Peer Relations 21. Works in a professional and collaborative manner with all team members and physicians in the delivery of patient care and monitoring. 22. Displays a commitment of the value of teamwork by building strong relationships with patients, families, and team members. Cooperates and collaborates to perform duties promoting a unified and spirited workplace. Departmental Protocols 23. Follows all department protocols 24. Complies with all departmental policies described in the Departmental Policy and Procedure Manual. Neurodiagnostic Equipment 25. Maintains all neurodiagnostic equipment in good working order. 26. Inspects for malfunctions and makes minor adjustments. Reports to manager/designee for major repairs. Cleans equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and within established HMH policy and procedure. Continuing Education27. Enhances professional growth and development through annual participation in educational programs, in-services, workshops, reading current publications on Neurophysiology testing/technology and Neurological disease, online CME through various professional organizations and manufacturers, and viewing recorded educational programs. Safety and Infection Control 28. Practices universal precautions and follows all safety and infection control policies. 29. Disinfects and cleans equipment according to the manufacturer's guidelines and standards outlined in the Infection Control policy and Department policy. 30. Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families/visitors/team members in accordance with hospital standards. 31. Reports Risk Management concerns. 32. Responsible for completing all hospital and department annual mandatory requirements. 33. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.34. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior. Physical Demands and Working Environment: 1. Exerts up to 50lbs of force occasionally and up to 25lbs to move objects. 2. Substances- potential exposure to hazardous substances, chemicals, equipment, and reagents. 3. Blood- borne pathogens exposure 4. Contact Job- potential exposure to patient blood and/or body fluids or airborne contaminants.
