The Ophthalmic Technical Assistant supports ophthalmologists by performing diagnostic tests, measuring vision, and preparing patients for examinations. They are also responsible for maintaining clinical equipment and ensuring accurate patient record documentation.
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma and a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification from the IJCAHPO. A minimum of one year of experience in an ophthalmic technical role is required.
Work with ophthalmologists to assist during eye surgery and setting up and performing maintenance on equipment. In addition, ophthalmology technologists often perform diagnostic testing, including measuring a patient's vision. Technologists in this career field must be familiar with ophthalmic pharmacology and understand the use of corrective lenses. Essential Functions: Meets with patients to discuss ocular medical history, chief complaint, current medications, allergies and family history to prepare the patient for the physician Performs initial work up including visual testing, color vision testing, retinoscopy, and refraction for the physician to review and consider during visit Performs various diagnostic tests and measurements including A-Scans, diagnostic ultrasounds, keratometry, lensometry, tonometry, and visual fields to support the physician's review Reviews patient records for completeness to allow for a timely and efficient patient visit Maintains supplies and equipment in examining rooms to allow for adequate patient care Completes in basket messages to allow for timely communication to patients and providers Maintains overall patient experience and safety, following all emergency clinical policies and protocols, to allow for optimal experience of care
High School Diploma Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by International Joint Commission on Allied Health personnel In Ophthalmology 1 year experience as an Ophthalmic Tech
