Histotechnicians receive, accession, and prepare biological materials, performing essential steps like fixation, embedding, microtomy, staining, and coverslipping to support disease diagnosis and treatment. They must also maintain laboratory equipment, follow turnaround standards, and assist pathologists within their scope of practice.
Candidates need successful completion of an accredited Histotechnician or Histotechnologist program, or an equivalent combination of education (HS plus college hours including biology/chemistry) and one year of full-time histopathology lab experience within the last five years. Alternatively, two or more years of experience in all routine histology areas can substitute for academic credit or certification.
