The Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care to patients with neurological conditions requiring surgical intervention, working collaboratively with neurosurgeons and the interdisciplinary team. Responsibilities include performing comprehensive neurological assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostics, assisting in surgical planning, managing pre- and post-operative care, and providing patient education.
Candidates must complete an accredited master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate program for Nurse Practitioners and hold current licensure and DEA permits in the state of practice. A minimum of 2 years of experience in neurosurgery, neurology, or critical care is preferred, along with national board certification (e.g., AGACNP-BC).
Conduct comprehensive neurological and physical assessments of neurosurgical patients. Order, interpret, and evaluate diagnostic studies such as CT, MRI, and labs. Assist in formulating and implementing treatment plans in collaboration with neurosurgeons. Provide pre-operative and post-operative patient care, including wound management and neurological monitoring. Perform procedures within scope of practice such as lumbar punctures, suturing, and incision and drainage. Monitor patients in the ICU, step-down, and outpatient settings. Participate in surgical rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings. Provide patient and family education regarding surgical procedures, treatment plans, and recovery expectations. Assist with care coordination and discharge planning. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education related to neurosurgery. This position also provides on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours. Qualifications Completion of a master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate from an accredited nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. If Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred. Minimum 2 years of experience in neurosurgery, neurology, or critical care preferred. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice. State Controlled Substance License (if required by State) National board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC), Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader: Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP–C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (A-GNP), Adult (ANP-C) Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.
