The Certified Surgical Technician assists surgeons during operative procedures and ensures the operating room is properly prepared and sterile. They are responsible for managing surgical equipment, handling specimens, and maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff.
Requirements summary
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technician program and hold a current certification. The role requires strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting and standing for extended periods.
This role is located at the Ambulatory Surgery Center in Freehold, NJ, which is part of Prism Vision Group Compensation Range: $22.57 - $46.95/hr (Dependent on Experience) The Certified Surgical Technician will assist the surgeon during all operative and invasive procedures.
Assures the Operating Room is adequately prepared for surgical procedures.
Monitors Par levels of all surgical equipment and supplies in conjunction with other members of the surgical team.
Reports to Director of Nursing.
Essential
Duties & Responsibilities
Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurance, as necessary.
Adapts procedures to meet the individual needs of the patient within reason and by delegation of the surgeon.
Prepares the operating room in a timely and efficient manner with all instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment necessary for each individual procedure.
Demonstrates competence and care in specimen handling.
Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for the surgical procedure.
Accurately completed surgical counts (sponge, instrument, needle, etc.) and follows facility protocol if a discrepancy is found. Reports all discrepancies to the DON.
Carries out aseptic technique throughout the surgical procedure.
Maintains a safe environment for patient, coworker, and self.
Checks all equipment pre-operatively to ensure functionality.
Prepares the room within a reasonable time frame in order to ensure timely starts.
Maintains an orderly and sterile back table for the purpose of efficiency and follows physician preference for et-up.
Anticipates needs of physician and patient during the intraoperative phase.
Cleans and prepares room between procedures and after the last case of the day
Damp dusts the operating room prior to the start of any procedures
Restocks supplies and equipment
Maintains responsibility for the care of surgical instruments and adheres to guidelines on transport from OR to decontamination room.
Understands procedures for sterilization and can verbalize how to validate sterility.
Knows responsibilities as they pertain to the reprocessing stages.
Acquires, maintains, and utilizes all manufacturer instructions for use as they pertain to each instrument/item.
Adheres to all policies and procedures of the center.
Performs all aspects of reprocessing in a timely and efficient manner while adhering to all policies.
Maintains knowledge of operating all applicable equipment.
Performs required quality control through routine testing, cleaning, and monitoring to assure all equipment and instruments function properly.
Inspects all instruments/equipment and packaging for cleanliness, defects, and or malfunctions.
Assists in storing all sterilized items.
Transports instrumentation to and from sterile storage area when needed.
Ensure proper preventative maintenance is performed at required intervals.
Interacts with maintenance personnel when necessary to ensure there is service provided in a timely fashion to reduce any downtime or impact on patient care.
Verbalizes, understands, and utilizes appropriate PPE and surgical attire based on work location
Picks all supplies for the day’s cases in advance of the date of service to ensure availability
Accepts linen deliveries and assists in stocking when requested.
Maintains accurate tray sheets and inventory sheets.
Knowledge of Privacy Practices & Patient Bill of Rights.
Maintains knowledge of Infection Control & OSHA standards of practice.
Knowledge of centers Policies & Procedures.
Other duties as assigned to include inventory/expiration validation/stocking.

Demands: This position requires extensive mobility, walking, and standing. Most of the days work involves pushing, pulling, and lifting patients or equipment. There is a potential exposure to patients with communicable diseases and/or blood borne pathogens.
