The Medical Technologist performs laboratory testing, interprets quality control results, and maintains laboratory instruments according to regulatory guidelines. They also act as a resource for coworkers, assist with training, and ensure accurate documentation of patient testing and investigations.
Candidates must hold a baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology or a related science and possess or be eligible for ASCP certification. The role requires strong technical skills, the ability to work in a clinical environment, and fluent English communication.
Demonstrates technical and operational expertise Performs testing and test procedures according to established policies and guidelines Interprets quality control results and instrument function Designated as a charge tech and lead operator for laboratory instruments Advanced skills for special or advanced technical procedures Completes scheduled preventive maintenance duties Provides assistance and guidance involving repairs, validations, and function checks and works with vendors as appropriate. Collects blood specimens, etc. from laboratory outpatients Organizes, prioritizes, executes and interprets workload Acts as a resource technologist for coworkers in a specific area Functions as a designee in the absence of manager Multiple levels of expertise in areas of the lab. Actively assists coworkers with interpretations and troubleshooting and possible corrective actions Participates in Quality Assurance (QA) and Resource Management Assists and completes investigations involving unexpected or adverse outcomes and keeps documentation according to regulatory guidelines Organizes and adapts to changes in workflow due to instrumentation or computer downtimes Provides solutions and technical support to aid in delivery of patient care Assures patient care in unusual conditions/conflicts is not compromisedAssists and monitors necessary supplies and kit availability for patient testing Responsible for following manufacturer’s recommended instructions for utilizing testing material and kits as well as assists with reagent orders from vendors Technical and Teaching Assistance Participates in the bench instruction of Clinical Laboratory Scientist students, phlebotomy students, nurses and clinic staff Provides operational training for coworkers involving manual, automated, and organizational skills for patient testing. Provides knowledge acquired thru experience and training to assist new hires and current coworkers Practices good communication skills with internal and external customers Communicates hand-off details to coworkers at shift change Maintains composure and professionalism involving conflicts with internal and external customers
Education: Baccalaureate degree with major in Medical Technology or related science Experience: Less than one year License/Certifications: Certified as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by Board of Registry of ASCP or equivalent due upon hire or within 1 year from date of hire Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Multicultural sensitivity. Microsoft Office – basic computer skills. Customer/patient focused. Critical thinking skills using independent judgment in making decisions Other: Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position
