About the Role
Are you looking for a rewarding opportunity in a fast-paced orthopedic medical practice? We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Assistant-Lab Technician to join our clinical team! This position provides dual support across clinic (MA) and lab functions in an orthopedic setting. On MA days, this position would assist patients over the phone as a telephone triage medical assistant. On Lab days, this position will assist the lab by performing venipuncture, specimen processing/labeling, CLIA-waived testing, results documentation, and courier coordination. Working under the supervision of medical providers, ensuring skill and compassion as an MA and quality specimen collection, test execution, and accurate reporting within regulatory standards in the lab while providing excellent patient-centered care.
What you'll do Triage (MA) — Respond to inbound patient clinical calls in a timely, courteous, and professional manner.
Conduct thorough symptom-based triage and communicate patient concerns to providers based on urgency and priority.
Use electronic health records (EHR) to document all patient interactions, provider messages, and follow-up needs.
Educate patients on orthopedic conditions, post-op expectations, medication instructions, and home care guidance per physician protocols.
Route messages, prescription refill requests, and appointment concerns to appropriate departments or staff members.
Coordinate with front desk, clinical staff, and physicians to ensure seamless patient communication.
Follow HIPAA guidelines to maintain patient confidentiality and proper documentation.
Monitor provider messages and work queues to ensure prompt responses and resolution of patient concerns.
Lab (Phlebotomy/POCT) — Collect, label, and process blood, urine, and culture specimens accurately and efficiently.
Perform routine laboratory tests relevant to orthopedic care, such as urinalysis, CBCs, ESR, and CRP.
Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with quality control standards.
Ensure proper handling and documentation of specimens, maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
Input and report lab results into the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system in a timely manner.
Support providers with lab needs during in-office procedures and pre-surgical assessments.

Qualifications
Certified/Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA) or equivalent preferred, not required) Preferred: Minimum 2 years’ experience in telephone triage or clinical call handling, ideally in orthopedics or a specialty practice. Knowledge of orthopedic terminology Effective communication, and active listening skills. Proficiency in EMR/EHR practice management, (Athenahealth a plus!). Ability to multi-task and remain calm in a fast-paced environment Phlebotomy experience required Knowledge of CLIA-waived testing workflows and OSHA/BBP safety. Familiarity with orthopedic-related lab testing.
