The Occupational Therapist evaluates and treats residents while collaborating with families, physicians, and the interdisciplinary team to achieve optimal outcomes. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate clinical documentation and supervising COTAs, aides, and students.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy and possess an active California Occupational Therapist license. Experience in a skilled nursing or geriatric setting is preferred.
Evaluate residents within 24 hours (or one business day) of physician referral; document any delays appropriately Develop individualized treatment plans and obtain physician approval Treat residents according to physician-approved plans of care Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), aides, and students in compliance with state practice act Assist nursing staff with training of Restorative Aides as appropriate Communicate resident progress, challenges, and plans with the rehab and interdisciplinary teams Participate in patient care conferences, utilization review meetings, and rehab conferences as needed Complete evaluations, daily treatment notes, weekly progress notes, recertifications, and discharge documentation per regulatory and payer requirements Educate residents, families, and caregivers on maintenance programs and discharge preparation Participate in discharge planning and care coordination Recommend and facilitate ordering of durable medical equipment (DME) to promote independence in activities of daily living Report equipment issues to ensure safe and effective operation Maintain positive, professional relationships with residents, families, staff, and colleagues Supervisory Responsibilities Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), aides, and students Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy required Master’s or Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy preferred Skilled nursing or geriatric experience preferred Licensure & Certifications Current, active California Occupational Therapist license in good standing Must meet all continuing education requirements per state regulations Skills Proficient in electronic documentation systems (Casamba and PointClickCare preferred) Strong clinical judgment, communication, and organizational skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively Physical Demands Frequent standing, walking, reaching, pushing, and pulling Ability to exert up to 50 pounds frequently and 100 pounds occasionally Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling Visual abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions Work Environment Skilled nursing and rehabilitation setting Noise level typically low to moderate Reasonable accommodations available
