The Assistant Anatomic Pathologist prepares surgical tissue specimens for MOHS surgery and assists dermatology providers with patient care and documentation. They are responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring quality control, and managing patient communication regarding test results and scheduling.
Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in anatomic pathology or a medical laboratory. A valid driver's license is required for travel between office sites, along with the ability to operate specialized laboratory equipment.

Learn and understand how to handle MOHS specimen according to policy and procedure with proper technique including embedding specimen, cryostat sectioning, H&E Staining and cover slipping. Assist in collection and prepare dermatologic biopsy specimen for processing including labeling and biopsy log documentation. Observe and learn how to prepare and maintain all necessary reagents, stains, alcohols and laboratory equipment according to existing specification. Perform cleaning, maintenance and/or sterilization of equipment. Report malfunction of equipment to appropriate supervisor. Keep records for workload recording, preventive maintenance on equipment, proficiency testing and quality control to meet the office’s continuing quality improvement standards including documenting quality activities, proficiency testing, instrument and procedure calibrations and equipment maintenance logs. Prepare, file and track old slides following the retention policy of the office. Assist in biopsy log tracking, follow up and preparation of melanoma reporting. Have a general understanding of and prepare laboratory procedures and direct questions and inconsistencies to the appropriate contact to assure accurate patient results. Learn and understand how to prepare surgical instruments, sterile and non-sterile surgical packaging and surgical/clean fields. With provider direction, communicate to patients with lab and test results, triage patient phone calls, perform medication refills, schedule patient visits, MOHS surgery and excision/procedures providing clear direction and addressing any patient concern. OSHA, CLIA and HIPAA compliance. Enhances professional growth and development of self by participating in continuing education and in-service training. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: 1. Ability to learn and understand how to operate and maintain microscope, cryostat and H&E stainer. 2. Ability to learn and understand how to handle proper specimen collection, labeling, handling preservation, fixation, processing, preparation, transportation & storage. 3. Understanding of electronic medical records and documentation requirements. 4. Ability to understand written protocols, lab reference manuals and memos. 5. Ability to manage a steady volume of work accurately in a busy surgical environment. 6. Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team-based decision-making culture. 7. Demonstrated ability to work independently resulting in effective outcomes and on-time performance. 8. Must work carefully and precisely with attention to detail. 9.
