Boston Medical Center has implemented a comprehensive new graduate nurse transition to practice program incorporating the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies.
New graduate nurses are hired in cohorts.
The cohort members attend nursing orientation together, followed by a series of educational days over 6 months.
These activities, besides being educational, also bring the group together promoting social support and relevant discussion of common situations encountered in the first year of practice.
The new graduate nurse residency includes a variety of experiential learning modalities that provide opportunities for assimilation and application of clinical theory and concepts to bedside practice.

Schedule: Full time, 36 Hours; 12-hour Shifts. Must be available to work any shift, including weekends, until the completion of training. The specific shift assignments will be determined near the end of the orientation. You must obtain licensure for practice in Massachusetts before the start date and work full-time for six months in varying shifts. The selected candidates must make a two-year commitment to the unit that invests in training them. Upon completion of orientation, the nurse’s shift will be determined and assume positions of 36 Hour Night shift per week with every third weekend and every other holiday. SCHEDULING SUMMARY This schedule provides maximum exposure to the new clinical environment, colleagues, and patient populations. All cohort participants are paid as employees ($38.05 per hour) and will receive benefits according to Boston Medical Center’s established policies and procedures. Each nurse is responsible in collaboration with their preceptor and clinical nurse educator to devise weekly goals. Basic computer proficiency is inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information. Range: $38.05- $75.33 This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications.
