Provides advanced peer support and care coordination using lived recovery experience to help members navigate complex life challenges and maintain treatment engagement. Acts as a key connector between members, clinical teams, and external community resources while adhering to harm reduction and trauma-informed care principles.
Requires a High School Diploma or GED and a valid Washington State Department of Health certification as a Peer Counselor or Peer Support Specialist. Candidates must have at least one year of experience in the role and a clean history of substance use for the three years prior to employment.
Peer Support Tasks Maintain strict compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and Washington State confidentiality laws Protect member privacy during all peer support, care coordination, and documentation activities Share information only within authorized care teams and appropriate consent parameters Provide peer support services within scope of Peer Counselor certification and clinic policy Do not provide clinical counseling, diagnosis, or medical advice Escalate clinical concerns, safety risks, or treatment decisions to licensed staff Complete required documentation in the electronic medical record in accordance with clinic policy and regulatory standards Document peer encounters, care coordination activities, and referrals accurately and within required timeframes Support audit readiness by maintaining clear, factual, and professional documentation Identify and immediately report safety concerns, risk indicators, or changes in member status to clinical leadership Participate in crisis response protocols, including suicide risk escalation, per clinic policy Comply with mandatory reporting requirements as outlined by Washington State law and clinic procedures Participate in required DOH, federal, and state-mandated trainings, including substance use disorder, confidentiality, and safety training Maintain Peer Counselor certification and complete required continuing education Demonstrate ongoing competency in harm reduction and recovery-oriented best practices Maintain ethical, professional, and recovery-oriented boundaries with members Avoid dual relationships, conflicts of interest, or exploitation of peer relationships Uphold clinic values and regulatory standards in all member interactions Provide peer support grounded in lived experience to help members remain engaged in treatment and recovery Encourage wellness planning, personal responsibility, and the development of natural supports Support members in working through challenges, crises, and recovery goals Assist with individual and group activities under appropriate clinical oversight Collaborate as part of the multidisciplinary treatment team, including counselors, nurses, providers, and peers Participate in team meetings, treatment planning, and staffing discussions as appropriate Reinforce treatment goals and recovery plans through consistent member engagement Care Coordination Tasks Assist in assessing member needs related to housing, transportation, employment, benefits, legal issues, and other social determinants of health Support care coordination plans and provide updates as member needs evolve Connect members to internal clinic services and external community resources Serve as a point of contact between members, clinic staff, families (when appropriate), and service providers Monitor member progress and identify concerns or emerging risks, escalating appropriately to clinical leadership Support continuity of care by helping members navigate transitions and service referrals Additional Level 2 Responsibilities Serve as a more experienced peer resource for complex member situations Support consistency and follow-through on care coordination activities Assist with documentation related to peer support and care coordination services Identify gaps in resources and communicate opportunities for improvement to leadership Model professionalism, boundaries, and ethical peer practice within the team Administrative and Miscellaneous Duties Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner Participate in staff meetings, supervision, trainings, and assigned committees Maintain ethical and professional peer relationships with members and colleagues Support front desk, resource room, or other clinic functions as assigned Perform additional duties as needed to support clinic operations and member care Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory duties. Education/Experience: High School Diploma or GED. Must be a Certified Peer Counselor with Affiliated Agency Registration verified by the Washington State Department of Health or Certified Peer Support Specialist verified by DOH. Minimum of 1 year experience as a Certified Peer Counselor with Affiliated Agency Registration verified by the Washington State Department of Health or Certified Peer Support Specialist verified by DOH Opioid Treatment Program experience will be given hiring preference. Additional The nature of this position is fast paced in high stress situation and conditions. It is essential that the applicant has an ability and desire to learn and work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral problems in adults and seniors the presenting problems of the entire family unit. Effective communication with collateral agencies having contact with the consumer, and ethnic minority and low-income families as well as knowledge and awareness of cultural relevancy and issues. Computer literate, with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and electronic medical records systems, as well as a high level of initiative in keeping current with technological change. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, and outside contacts from a wide variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds; good diplomatic skills, including strong conflict-resolution skills. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent organizational and time management skills. Conducts all business activities in a professional and ethical manner. No history of alcohol or other drug misuse for 3 years prior to employment and does not display evidence of alcohol or other drug abuse while employed. Complies with and up to date with all other testing, screening, and credentialing as required. Must possess current driver’s license and have proof of insurance for transport of clients. Other Requirements Obtain and maintain a Level 3 Kalispel Tribe of Indians Work Permit. Nights, Weekends, and holidays may be required. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this job: Will spend some time on feet while filing, making photocopies, or standing to greet a visitor. Should have the ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs. Also, may be responsible for moving office supplies or carrying heavy files or boxes of paper. Travel Requirements Ability to travel as needed (minimal).
