The general dentist is responsible for improving patients' oral health, preventing future concerns, and treating various dental issues. They perform routine checkups, cleanings, and a range of dental procedures.
Candidates must be licensed to practice dentistry in New York and have graduated from an accredited dental college. A minimum of one year of experience in a primary care clinic is required, along with CPR certification.

It is most often a person's primary care dental provider. This means the general dentist is who individuals would go to for routine checkup and cleaning. One of their main goals is prevention, but general dentists can also treat a range of concerns that develop, as well as, types of dental trauma.
Remove decay from teeth and fill cavities Repair cracked or fractured teeth and remove teeth Straight teeth to correct bite issues Place sealants or whitening agents on teeth Administer anesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures Write prescriptions for antibiotics or other medications Examine X-rays of teeth, gums, the jaw, and nearby areas for problems Make models and measurements for dental appliances, such as dentures, to fit patients Teach patients about diet, flossing, use of fluoride, and other aspects of dental care Utilize dental equipment efficiently and effectively Educates patients by giving oral hygiene, plaque control, and postoperative instructions. Documents dental care services by charting in patient records. Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential. Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed. Deals with public and staff, both in person and over the telephone, in tactful and professional manner.
