The Medical Assistant provides direct patient care under the direction of nursing and medical staff, including preparing patients for exams and performing clinical tasks. They are also responsible for laboratory duties, point-of-care testing, and coordinating follow-up care for oncology patients.
Candidates must have a high school diploma and a valid Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, etc.) along with BLS certification. Experience in a practice setting is required, with oncology experience and phlebotomy certification preferred.
Direct Patient Care Prepares equipment and rooms and aids providers with treatment of patients Perform vitals, medication review, phlebotomy and other duties to prep patients prior to rooming Performs point of care testing as ordered, documents per standard and communicates results to provider Demonstrates knowledge and skill in accessing & de-accessing ports including flushing the line and sterile technique Demonstrates knowledge and skill in medication administration as defined within scope for WHS Maintains safety needs of the patient including cleaning work surfaces between patients Rotate among various clinical and non-clinical service areas such as lab if needed Cross trains other team members Seeks training, supervision or direction from leadership as needed Coordination of Services for Episode of Care Assists in coordinating patient care and services under the direction of a nurse or provider Informs nurse, provider and nurse manager of changes in patients condition, as appropriate Provides relationship-based patient centered care that is consistent with population specific characteristics (age, gender, disease, etc.) in a manner that adapts service delivery to reflect an understanding of culture diversity Team Work and Collaboration Coordinates the delivery and documentation of safe quality patient care that promotes the professional care delivery model Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration by practicing in a manner that is fiscally responsible and promotes the recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members Professional Development and Initiative Completes all initial and ongoing professional competency assessment, required mandatory education, and population specific education May be asked to serve as a preceptor for onboarding Medical Assistants/students and is an exemplary role model for all staff or students for all disciplines to ensure that there is a current and future qualified workforce; modeling professionalism and creating a healthy work environment Laboratory Duties and Expectations Properly start lab equipment daily and maintain daily logs and documentation requested Perform laboratory tests according to orders and instructions Order and stock supplies weekly Perform daily quality control and cleaning procedures according to guidelines Evidence Based Practice and Research Promotes Evidence based practice, regarding safe, quality patient care. Participates in activities such as value analysis as part of the decision-making process in evaluating patient care products Upholds all health care system/organizational policies and procedures and clinical competencies put forth by this job description and professional association including legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements and standards ensuring by way of example, such goals as TJC patient safety goals and WHS safety absolutes. May serve as Safety Coach Participates in data collection to advance evidence-based practice Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all WellStar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
