A phlebotomist internship is a supervised, hands-on clinical program that bridges classroom instruction with professional practice. Interns work under licensed professionals to collect blood, handle specimens, and interact with patients in settings like hospitals, clinics, and laboratories. The day-to-day responsibilities of a phlebotomy intern typically include the following key areas: Key Responsibilities Blood Collection: Perform venipuncture, capillary punctures, and other blood collection techniques under direct supervision. Specimen Processing: Accurately label, handle, process, and prepare blood and other samples for laboratory testing. Patient Interaction: Verify patient identities, explain procedures to ease anxiety, and ensure patient comfort and privacy. Safety & Sanitation: Adhere strictly to OSHA, HIPAA, and facility infection-control protocols, including proper use of PPE and sanitizing equipment. Administrative Duties: Assist with data entry into Electronic Medical Records (EMR) or Laboratory Information Systems (LIS). Typical Requirements Education: Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training or certification program.
