Provide one-on-one support to an individual with mild intellectual disability, epilepsy, and visual impairment to increase independence in daily living. Responsibilities include assisting with personal hygiene, household chores, meal planning, and safe community navigation.
Candidates should have experience supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities or visual impairments and possess strong communication skills. Required certifications include CPR, First Aid, a current TB test, and Live Scan fingerprint clearance.
Description Position Overview We are seeking a reliable, patient, and attentive Independent Living Services (ILS) Instructor to provide one-on-one afternoon support on Tuesdays for an individual with Mild Intellectual Disability and Epilepsy. Services will focus on increasing independence in daily living skills, community navigation, and household responsibilities while ensuring safety and accessibility. The ideal candidate is adaptable, observant, and comfortable supporting an individual with visual impairment. Primary Goals of Support Improve personal hygiene and self-care routines Support safe and confident community navigation Assist with household chores and organization Develop meal preparation and meal planning skills Key Responsibilities Personal Hygiene & Daily Living Skills Provide guidance and support with personal hygiene routines Encourage independence while offering assistance as needed Help establish consistent daily routines Household Chores Assist with cleaning, organizing, and maintaining the home Break tasks into manageable steps to support success Adapt methods to accommodate visual impairment Meal Preparation & Meal Planning Support planning simple, nutritious meals Assist with safe meal preparation and kitchen navigation Adapt cooking tasks to ensure accessibility and safety Community Navigation Assistance Provide guidance and supervision during community outings Assist with safely navigating environments, particularly unfamiliar or high-traffic areas Offer orientation support and mobility assistance as needed Visual Impairment–Related Challenges The individual’s visual impairment may present unique challenges that staff must be prepared to address, including: Navigation & Safety Additional guidance may be required to safely navigate environments Staff may need to provide orientation support, mobility assistance, or introduce adaptive strategies or technology (e.g., tactile organization systems or GPS tools designed for visually impaired individuals) Communication & Accessibility Tasks involving written or visual information may require adaptation Staff may assist with reading mail, organizing household items, or supporting the use of voice-activated or accessibility-focused technology Adapted Training Needs Supporting these needs may require additional training or preparation to ensure effective, safe, and respectful services Challenges Related to Location The individual’s location may present logistical considerations, including: Limited Staff Availability Living in a remote or underserved area may reduce the pool of available and qualified staff, impacting consistency of services Transportation Barriers Staff may experience commuting challenges due to limited public transportation options, heavy traffic, or difficult accessibility to the home Ideal Candidate Qualities Experience supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, or visual impairment preferred Strong communication, observation, and problem-solving skills Patient, dependable, and adaptable Comfortable providing hands-on support while promoting independence Able to work independently during scheduled afternoon hours Work Environment One-on-one support in home and community settings Tuesday-only afternoon schedule Structured, supportive, and safety-focused role
Required Qualifications & Compliance Experience supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, epilepsy, or visual impairment preferred Patient, dependable, and adaptable approach Strong communication and observation skills Ability to provide hands-on assistance as needed Two forms of valid identification Current CPR and First Aid certification Live Scan fingerprint clearance Current TB test clearance
