The CSFA assists surgeons during surgical procedures by providing exposure and maintaining hemostasis. They perform authorized technical functions under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technology school with at least 2 years of scrubbing experience. Required certifications include BLS and certification as a Surgical Assistant or First Assist from recognized boards.
The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) actively assists the surgeon in the safe performance of surgical procedures by providing appropriate exposure, maintaining hemostasis, and performing other authorized technical functions. The CSFA functions under the direct supervision and direction of the surgeon. When functioning in the CSFA role, the individual does not concurrently perform the duties of the primary Surgical Tech. Practice is carried out in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements, organizational policies, and within the scope of education, training, and certification as a Surgical Tech
