Perform routine laboratory tests across various disciplines to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Maintain laboratory instrumentation and adhere to quality control guidelines for reporting results.
Requires a High School Diploma or GED and an Associate degree from an accredited MLT or CLA program. Candidates must be able to perform specialized tests and handle clinical samples.
MAJOR ACTIVITIES: Performs all tasks of Laboratory Assistant. Performs minor trouble-shooting problems with equipment. Performs record-keeping pertaining to the job. Performs examinations, smears, biochemical tests, serological tests and other necessary tests to identify micro-organisms. Receives and plants cultures; performs and reads gram stains and performs necessary tests for organism identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing, where applicable Performs tests for processing blood, determines blood types, cross-matches blood. Performs a complete urinalysis and additional related tests required. Performs hematological tests, studies morphology of blood constituents and performs various coagulation tests. Performs routine chemical tests on blood specimens and other body fluids. Performs daily maintenance on all laboratory instrumentation as required. Maintains work area in a neat, sanitary and orderly manner. Adheres to established guidelines for quality control in reporting test results. Operates and calibrates various instruments and calculates test results accordingly. Performs other routine tests and prepares necessary reagents in various areas (i.e., Serology, Hematology, Chemistry, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Urinalysis). May function in one area of laboratory and perform certain specialized tests and/or use special equipment in that area. Prepares samples for shipment to System and contract reference labs and local labs, as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned
