Informed by basic research done at our Sloan Kettering Institute, scientists across MSK collaborate to conduct innovative translational and clinical research that is driving a revolution in our understanding of cancer as a disease and improving the ability to prevent, diagnose, and treat it. MSK is dedicated to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians, who go on to pursue our mission at MSK and around the globe.
Treatment and
Simulation
Time: 60% Administers radiation oncology treatment with accuracy & efficiency as per the physician’s orders & the simulation instructions; Localizes Patient’s treatment site and develops corresponding set up procedures.
Performance
Expectations:
Reviews all patient information for patient history, MRN, account number, date of birth, area of treatment, floor, patient type; identifies any prescription errors or omissions and verifies with a Radiation Oncologist.
Positions patient on the treatment table according to the simulation set up instructions. Sets the appropriate machine parameters as indicated by the treatment plan and physician’s prescription.
Performs a “time out” to verify that all information is correct before turning on the treatment machine.
Follows imaging procedures per the department’s guidelines.
Continuously monitors patient throughout the treatment procedure via the video screens and intercom system.
Notifies appropriate medical staff of significant changes in a patient’s condition.
Follows established machine safety guidelines.
Follows established guidelines for shutting down the machines at the end of the day.
Provides continuous supervision, instruction and evaluation of radiation therapy students.
Follows infection control guidelines.
Bills and documents patients’ procedures appropriately as per departmental guidelines.
Maintains a neat, clean and user friendly environment. Prepares and cleans the treatment room following infection control guidelines after each patient and at the end of the day
Works with physician and treatment planning to develop a course of treatment deemed appropriate for each patient.
Takes a face identification photo of the patient to be placed within the patient’s treatment record at the first visit.
Evaluates patients for claustrophobia, follows hospital guidelines for contrast media, ability to be positioned for optimal accuracy and maintains best position during treatment.
Constructs immobilization devices as needed for various treatment sites. Utilizes set up devices to ensure the reproducibility and comfort of the patient’s daily set up.
Properly straightens and aligns the patient in the required treatment position and, using laser measurement, verifies the straightness and reproducibility of the patient’s position.
Localizes the treatment area utilizing fluoroscopy, KV/MV images, CT scans.
Writes clear and concise set-up instructions to ensure the reproducibility on the treatment machine; takes photos to assist in the ease of following instructions at the time of simulation.
Works alongside the chiefs, supervisor, floor leads, and sim traffic to maintain the schedule and control the flow of additional patients.
Provides instruction on simulation and treatment techniques to radiation therapy students on an ongoing basis).
Participate in RTT exchange program.
Works collaboratively in groups, committees.
Bills and documents patients' procedures appropriately as per departmental guidelines. Compliant with Radiation Therapist Tier Criteria When needed, performs all simulation and treatment duties of an
MRI technologist ,
