The Medical Assistant supports providers, nurse managers, and Case Managers in patient examination and treatment within inpatient or ambulatory settings, handling various clinical and clerical tasks. Responsibilities include taking histories, preparing patients, assisting during exams, collecting specimens, drawing blood, and performing basic lab tests.
Candidates must graduate from an approved Medical Assistant school and possess American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification valid for at least six months upon hire. Credentialing as a Medical Assistant by AAMA or RMA by ASMT is preferred.
Summary Medical Assistant performs specialized work in inpatient or ambulatory care settings. Emphasis of the work is on assisting providers, nurse managers and Case Manager in the examination and treatment of patients and performing a variety of related clerical tasks.
Administrative Duties (may include, but not limited to): Using computer applications; Answering telephones; Welcoming patients; Updating and filing patient medical records; Coding and filling out insurance forms; Scheduling appointments; Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services; Handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping. Clinical Duties (may include, but not limited to): Taking medical histories; Preparing patients for examination; Assisting the physician during exams and certain procedures; Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens; Performing basic laboratory tests; Drawing blood; Taking electrocardiograms; May perform other advanced clinical duties under direction and supervision of a nurse or a physician, as needed based on assigned unit. Experience Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.
Education Graduation from an approved Medical Assistant school is required. Preferred Qualification: Bilingual Spanish Credentials Certification by the American Association of Medical Assistants or credentialing as a Registered Medical Assistant by the American Society of Medical Technologies preferred. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
