The General Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical care across various settings, performing procedures such as hernia repair and colorectal surgery. They also manage acute and chronic wounds and educate patients and families about care plans.
Candidates must have a medical degree, complete a surgery residency, and be board certified or eligible. They should possess excellent diagnostic skills, strong communication abilities, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.
The General Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical care across inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings, delivering expert diagnosis, treatment, and management of a wide range of surgical conditions. This position requires advanced operative skill, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to patient-centered care. The surgeon works collaboratively with anesthesiologists, CRNAs, physician assistants, perioperative and peri anesthesia teams, ED clinicians, hospitalists and the Wound Clinic to ensure coordinated and effective care. Responsibilities include performing common general surgical procedures such as hernia repair, cholecystectomy, endoscopy, appendectomy, management of small bowel obstruction, colorectal surgery and skin and soft tissue surgical procedures. The surgeon also provides evaluation and management of acute and chronic wounds within the Wound Clinic’s multidisciplinary model. Additional duties include educating patients and families about procedures and care plans, reviewing test results, addressing abnormalities, and offering a surgical perspective for palliative care, pain management, and support for end-of-life decisions. Participation in departmental meetings, ongoing professional development, and training activities is also expected.
Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited medical school Completion of a surgery residency program Board certification or eligibility for certification by the appropriate governing body Valid Vermont medical license to practice Valid Vermont DEA license CPR for Healthcare providers Proficiency in surgical techniques and procedures, including familiarity with the latest advancements. Excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills to effectively assess and treat conditions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport with patients and collaborate with healthcare teams. Detail-oriented approach with a commitment to accuracy and patient safety. Dedication to ongoing professional development and staying updated with emerging trends and research.

Compensation Disclosure in Accordance with Vermont Act 155 In compliance with Vermont Act 155, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital provides the compensation range for this position in good faith. The listed range represents the pay scale reasonably expected for a successful candidate based on factors such as relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market competitiveness. Final compensation will be determined during the hiring process.
