The Medical Assistant (Patient Service Representative, as needed) provides integrated clinical and administrative support in an academic outpatient psychiatry clinic. This role supports faculty, residents, fellows, and learners while ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care and efficient clinic operations. Key responsibilities include medical components, registering new patients, entering data in eCW, conducting in-person screenings, and assisting patients through the check-in/out process. The MA/PSR maintains compliance with institutional policies, accreditation standards, licensing/certification, and the provider’s orders while contributing to a safe and respectful clinical environment.
$18.02 up to $29.02 an hour Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities): Clinical Support and Direct Patient Care Adhere to department policies, procedures, protocols, and standards. Prepare, administer, and document medication and Therapeutic injections, ensuring all controlled medication is properly secured. Attend monthly and mandatory meetings, complete all necessary training as assigned by Meharry Medical Group, the State of Tennessee, and any other accrediting agency requirements. Reschedule appointments, arrange follow-up, contact no shows, communicate pertinent data and findings to the provider and team. Disinfect equipment and instruments between each patient according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Maintain a clean and orderly patient environment according to universal precautions and OSHA standards. Inform the manager when treatment room supplies need to be replenished to ensure sufficient quantity. Schedule test, obtain proper authorization or precertification, and review consent with patients or conservator. Patient Services and Front Office Operations Serve as the first point of contact for patients, families, and visitors; greet patients courteously and maintain a respectful, trauma-informed environment. Answer phones, triage messages, and communicate effectively with patients and care team members. Schedule new and return appointments, referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up visits, ensuring coordination of care across services. Verify patient demographics, insurance eligibility, and registration information; check patients in and out and collect payments as applicable. Other Duties as Assigned Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor in support of clinic operations, patient care and departmental duties. Education and Experience Required: A high school diploma or GED Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a medical assistant in a medical office Medical Assistant Certification from either the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or an equivalent nationally recognized body. Education and Experience Preferred: Familiarity with behavioral health outpatient clinic setting Proficiency working across medical and dental offices or hospital environments Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) Certification Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong attention to detail and organizational ability.
