The role involves performing and interpreting complex, specialized Blood Bank tests, including routine procedures like ABO/Rh typing and antibody identification using specialized techniques. Additionally, the technologist will handle circulator duties such as specimen logging, prioritizing work, blood product manipulation, and maintaining quality control for reagents and equipment.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, or a related field like Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology, along with advanced Medical Technology certification, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A crucial requirement is eligibility for a New York State (NYS) Licensed Clinical Lab Technologist license upon hire.
Prepares to meet the competencies required to perform specialized testing and support for the laboratory section. Performs complex technical assignments with supervisory oversight. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs and interprets routine Blood Bank tests, including ABO/Rh typing, direct and indirect antiglobulin tests, cross matches, transfusion reaction workups, fetal screen, and Kleihauer-Betke stains. Performs circulator duties, including logging in of specimens, checking patient computer files, prioritizing and triaging work, component preparation, component issues, answering phones, and other miscellaneous tasks. Performs blood product processing and manipulation, including rejuvenation, freezing, deglycerolizing, washing, pooling, and thawing. Completes corresponding paperwork. Performs daily reagent quality control, and participates in equipment quality control and preventative maintenance. Performs antibody identifications by using routine antibody panels and reference procedures, including the use of enzymes, synsorbs, absorptions/elutions, antibody titrations, antigen screening, and other specialized tests. Performs irradiation of blood products. Performs retypes on units received from other facilities, processes, and inputs products into inventory, monitors inventory levels for appropriateness, and orders additional products if necessary. Participates in stocking supplies, cleaning general lab areas, and answering phones as needed. Other duties as assigned.
