The Medical Assistant is responsible for preparing patients for examinations, gathering vital signs, and performing various clinical tests including EKGs and specimen collection. Additionally, they maintain the cleanliness and stock of examination rooms and provide educational materials to families.
Candidates must have a high school diploma and at least 6 months of experience in a patient care setting or completion of an MA program. MA certification is preferred, and Basic Life Support certification is required within 60 days.
Escorts or transports patient to exam rooms, treatment rooms or other areas as directed. Prepare patient for examination and treatment by Physician or other Provider; gather patient data regarding condition; take vital signs, height and weight and document this information in the medical record. Obtain past medical history and history of current illness/condition. Perform point of care testing as required for their position. Obtain specimens from patients through venipuncture and capillary collection (blood), nasal, throat, skin and cheek swabs, and urine specimens from patients in accordance with Physician or other Provider order or written protocol; receive and labels specimens from patients and verify patient's information and transfer that information to specimen container. Facilitate transport of specimens. Prepare clinic area by stocking rooms with appropriate medical supplies; dispose of medical waste and clean and maintain laboratory and examination room equipment. Prepares examination rooms by arranging sterile instruments on tray and stocks rooms with appropriate medical supplies. Disposes of medical waste. Cleans and maintains examination room equipment. Cleans and maintains examination rooms between patients. Perform EKG's as required for their Department, in accordance with Physician or other Provider order or written protocol. Provide patients and families pre-printed instructions and educational material, as directed by Physician or other Provider.
