The Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthesia for various surgical cases using different agents, focusing on skilled professional techniques and constant patient condition review during surgery. Responsibilities also include immediate preoperative and postoperative patient care related to anesthesia introduction and recovery.
Candidates must hold a current license as a registered professional nurse and have graduated from an accredited nurse anesthesia education program. Certification or recertification by the AANA Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is also required.
The Nurse Anesthetist administers anesthesia under medical direction for diversified surgical cases, utilizing inhalation, intravenous, spinal or rectal agents. Emphasis in the work is on skilled application of appropriate professional techniques, constant review of anesthetized patients' condition during surgery, and completion of remedial measures to counteract unfavorable clinical conditions. Incumbents are also responsible for immediate preoperative and postoperative care of patients in the introduction of and recovery from anesthesia. Work is performed in accordance with recognized professional principles and techniques. All procedures and techniques utilized during anesthesia for surgery are subject to supervision by the Attending Anesthesiologist assigned to that area.
