The Ophthalmic Technician collects patient histories and performs various diagnostic ocular tests to provide clinical data to the treating physician. They also assist with in-office procedures, lasers, and patient education regarding post-operative care and medication.
Candidates must have at least one year of experience in ophthalmology and the ability to perform manifest refraction and Goldmann tonometry. An associate degree and JCAHPO certification are preferred.
Description The Ophthalmic Technician is responsible for collecting and recording ocular and systemic patient histories, visual acuities, BP, IOP, Auto refractions, Manifest Refractions, performing external examinations, and dry-eye testing, as well as disease specific extra testing. Ophthalmic Technicians may not diagnose or treat eye disorders and may not prescribe medications; they are not independent practitioners. They can provide diagnostic information and clinical data in the ophthalmic exam to the physician, who is treating patients, and may assist in surgery, patient education, and compliance with prescribed treatment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Collecting and recording patient medical history Instructing patients on post-operative care, medication use, contact lens care and exam expectations. Performing visual acuity testing, auto and Manifest Refractions (measurements for the glasses prescription), tonometry (measuring eye pressure) (Goldmann required) Measuring pupil size and reactivity using PERRLA Testing elements of movement (eye muscle function) Performing confrontational visual field testing, pachymetry (Corneal thickness measurement) Performing dry eye testing including Zone Quick and TBUT, Interferometry, brightness acuity testing Participating in light cleaning of the facility Maintaining a sanitized environment Performing corneal topography, retinal nerve fiber layer measurements, retinal thickness and topography, fluorescein angiography, B-scan ultrasonography Assisting with contact lens fitting and instructing patients on insertion and removal of contacts. Preparing for and assisting with in-office procedures including consenting patients Assisting with Lasers or minor procedures Working within scope of practice under the supervision of the treating physician
Travel between clinic locations is required and scheduled at the discretion of the clinical managers or designee.
Required: Minimal of one year in Ophthalmology Preferred: Certification o Certification through JCAHPO Associates Degree - preferred Skills and Abilities: Superior interpersonal and communications skills. Ability to perform manifest refraction is required Ability to perform Goldmann tonometry is required. Ability to effectively multitask Attentive to detail and accuracy.
