The Certified Surgical Technician facilitates operative procedures by preparing and providing sterile instruments and maintaining the sterile field. They assist the surgical team by anticipating needs and ensuring compliance with hospital policies and safety standards.
Requirements summary
Candidates must be certified through a nationally recognized certifying agency and hold a high school diploma or GED, along with an associate degree or vocational certification in surgical technology. Knowledge of basic sciences and operating room techniques is required, along with on-the-job training.
Primary Function/General Purpose of Position Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment.
Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team.
Essential Job Functions Assists with the care, preparation, and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
Maintains open communication with members of the surgical team to assure a collaborative work environment is maintained.
Assists in training and orientation of students and new staff members.
Complies with established hospital policies, procedures, and practices to assure that standards of quality, efficiency, and safety are met.
Attends educational programs as prescribed by departmental policy and individual need.
Maintains all required certifications.
Stays abreast of changes in policies and procedures.

Must take call per Policy and Procedure Work requires knowledge of basic sciences, such as anatomy and physiology, microbiology, etc., asepsis and sterile techniques and operating room techniques generally acquired through completion of an accredited two year program of surgical technology.

Training Work includes three to six months on-the-job training (orientation) for full familiarity with surgeon's preferences and department policies and procedures.
