This position involves performing quantitative and qualitative clinical laboratory determinations as requested by physicians, which includes procuring specimens, computing test results, and submitting completed reports. Responsibilities are expanded to include participation in quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and policy/procedure review activities.
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s Degree and have successfully completed an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program, evidenced by California State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. A minimum of one year of recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory is required, and American Society of Clinical Pathology certification is recommended.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is a single position class in which the incumbent’s responsibility of functioning must be based on advanced knowledge and skills in providing diagnostic testing to medical staff. Incumbents are assigned to work or float in appropriate areas. Responsibilities are expanded to include participation in activities relating to quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, policy and procedure review, in-service training and staff development.
Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree with successful completion of an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program as evidenced by licensure from the State of California.
Minimum one year recent experience in an approved hospital laboratory.
American Society of Clinical Pathology certification recommended.
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the State of California is required.

Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.
Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing clinical laboratory practices.
Perform the full range of laboratory duties and responsibilities in an acute care setting.
Plan and organize diagnostic testing procedures on patient specimens.
Maintain concise and complete records and test reports as required.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, and fellow employees, and with all internal and external customers.
Handle absentee replacement on short notice.
Work occasional irregular hours.
Manage emergency or crisis situations; requires judgement/action which could result in undesirable patient outcomes.
Secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together.
Keep abreast of developments in area of laboratory testing.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
