Responsibilities
- IMC / PCU Overview The Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), also known as the Progressive Care Unit (PCU), at The George Washington University Hospital bridges the gap between ICU and general medical-surgical care.
- The IMC/PCU provides specialized monitoring and treatment for patients who require higher acuity care, including continuous cardiac monitoring, complex medication management, and frequent assessments.
- Patients in the IMC/PCU may include those stepping down from the ICU, patients with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, or medical conditions requiring close observation, and those at risk for clinical deterioration.
- Nurses in this unit develop strong assessment skills, critical thinking, and early-intervention expertise while working in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities
Patient Care: Provide evidence-based nursing care to IMC/PCU patients with complex medical and surgical conditions.
Monitoring
- Perform continuous cardiac and physiologic monitoring, recognize early signs of deterioration, and intervene appropriately.
- Medication
- Management: Administer and titrate select IV medications and therapies in accordance with unit protocols.
Collaboration
- Partner with physicians, advanced practice providers, ICU teams, and ancillary services to ensure seamless patient care and safe transitions.
- Clinical
- Judgment: Apply strong assessment and decision-making skills to manage changes in patient condition and escalate care when needed.
Advocacy
Support patients and families through education, communication, and compassionate care.
