The Pulmonary Technical Specialist performs diagnostic procedures such as PFT testing and bronchoscopies while ensuring laboratory compliance with CAP, CLIA, and DOH regulations. They also manage laboratory operations, troubleshoot diagnostic equipment, and support the educational needs of fellows and residents.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care or a related field and possess a valid Respiratory Care Practitioner license. At least 5 years of experience in a pulmonary function and blood gas lab, along with RRT certification and CPR/ACLS credentials, is required.

GENERAL OVERVIEW: Performs diagnostic care within the pulmonary lab and leads the lab in all College of American Pathology (CAP) guidelines. Ensures that lab procedures performed comply with regulatory, accrediting, and licensure requirements. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintains and ensures that the Blood Gas Laboratory operates to meet Federal (CLIA), State (DOH – Bureau of Laboratories) and accrediting (College of American Pathologists) requirements. (50%) Performs PFT testing, exercise testing and bronchoscopies. May perform advanced diagnostic procedures (complex stress testing, HBO non-complex treatments) depending upon facility requirements. (15%) Interfaces with the Medical Director regarding clinical interpretation and implementation of diagnostic policies and procedures. Reviews and updates laboratory diagnostic policy and procedure manuals. (10%) Maintains and troubleshoots current diagnostic equipment and evaluates new technology and equipment needs. Maintains analyzer logs and corrective action on all ABG and PFT machines according to CAP and manufacturer's guidelines. (10%) Supports the educational needs of Fellows and/or Residents rotating through the PFT lab and supports the needs of research protocols and testing. (5%) Supports manager with daily operations. (5%) Maintains current knowledge of billing and documentation policies/regulations and system policies. (5%) Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Bachelor’s in Respiratory Care from a CoARC accredited advanced level respiratory program or a Bachelor’s of Science degree with Associate’s in Respiratory Care State licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner CRT Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) 5 years’ experience in an active Pulmonary Function and Blood Gas lab Experience with successful CAP inspections. CPR – American Heart Association. Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate. Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate. Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
