The Medical Technologist performs complex analysis of body fluids and tissues to provide accurate diagnostic data for patient care. They are also responsible for maintaining laboratory equipment, performing quality control, and ensuring safety and efficiency in all testing procedures.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science. ASCP certification is required or must be achieved within two years of employment.
Summary: The duties of this position includes but is not limited to accurate, precise, and timely patient test results for the diagnosis and management of human illness. Position utilizes automation and computerization, and manual methods. Responsible for quality control and instrument operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Position handles blood, tissue, fecal matter, sputum, urine, spinal fluid and other body fluids. Specimens may be contaminated with infectious diseases including HIV and other blood borne pathogens. (expected to achieve ASCP certification within 2 years) Responsibilities And Duties: 75% Independently performs complex analysis of all body fluids and tissues once training and competency assessment completed. Determines reliability of all analytic data before it can be released as a patient measurement for diagnosis and treatment. Interpret information often based on judgmental decisions from technical procedures and instruments. Requires knowledge of medical correlation of data; interrelationships between different laboratory parameters; physiologic factors affecting date; and the effect of numerous medications and medical treatment on data. 10% Performs quality control checks on each procedure, reagents, stains, equipment, etc. Is involved in the laboratory Quality Assurance program to evaluate quality of service to hospital patients. 5% Continuing Education and Competencies. Remains current in field. Trains new employees and students. Maintains competencies, mandatory education requirements (ACE). 5% Provides diagnostic information to physicians and nursing personnel regarding interpretation of patient results determined by laboratory analysis. Performs further investigative evaluations according to established protocols. 5% Miscellaneous Duties. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
