The Child Life Specialist fosters the psycho-social, emotional, and physical development of children through therapeutic play and medical procedure preparation. They collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care and support family-centered interventions.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Child Life, Family Studies, Child Development, or a related field and have completed a Child Life internship. Certification in Child Life is required within one year of the hire date.
The Child Life Specialist fosters psycho-social, emotional, and physical development of children and adolescents through the provision of developmentally appropriate preparation for medical procedures, post-procedural education, and therapeutic play in order to maintain normalized living patterns and minimize stress and anxiety. Confers with multidisciplinary team members to promote continuity of care and develop discharge goals. Realizes the importance of family centered care, and incorporates this value into daily intervention, working with children from various hospital units (i.e., children of adult patients, siblings of pediatric patients, and outpatient services).
