The Ophthalmic Assistant will perform preliminary diagnostic eye examinations and assist physicians with patient evaluations. They are also responsible for maintaining clinical instruments and documenting patient medical data.
Candidates must have a high school education or equivalent. A minimum of one year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry is required.
Under close supervision perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to, central and peripheral visual field tests; simple color vision tests; indentation and applantation tonometry tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation.
Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
Measure acuity of patient, with and without glasses, for distance and near vision; obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems; record findings on patient chart. Administer Electro-Retinogram and Electro-Oculogram tests to patients.
Obtain medical and personal data for patient charts.
Assist the physician to fit patients with contact lenses.
Calibrate and maintain all instruments used including, but not limited to, biomicroscopes, lensometer, keratometer, tangent screen, slit lamp and tonometers; clean and stock consultation rooms and microbiology laboratory with drugs and other supplies as needed. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education. Work requires 1 yeear of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry.
