The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to WIC participants through clinic visits, phone calls, and hospital visits. They are also responsible for maintaining accurate records, referring mothers to appropriate professionals, and assisting with breastfeeding promotion projects.
Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and personal experience breastfeeding at least one baby. A valid PA driver's license and the ability to pass state and federal background clearances are required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated basic oral and written communication skills and an ability to utilize counseling techniques. (Required). Basic computer skills for data input (Required). Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Is willing to be available to mothers outside WIC clinic hours and make/receive phone calls/text messages from home. Can work the number of hours specified by the local WIC agency. Has reliable transportation. Comfortable with leading small groups such as support group setting. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Must have a high school diploma or GED (Required). Has breastfed at least one baby (Required). PA Driver’s License (Required). Must obtain Child Abuse, PA State Police, FBI Fingerprinting and NSOR Clearances prior to starting employment. (Required)
