The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for performing various blood collections and processing specimens within the Central Collection department. They must ensure strict adherence to laboratory protocols, quality assurance guidelines, and regulatory standards such as CAP and JCAHO.
A high school diploma is required, while a phlebotomy course, Medical Assistant certification, or Associate of Arts degree is preferred. Candidates should have phlebotomy experience and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
Performs venous, arterial and capillary blood collection, processing and delivery of specimens to departments within Trinity Laboratory. Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for patient, sample and identification and labeling. Educates others and maintains knowledge of departmental functions, policies and procedures including AIDET and Focus value. Assists with the training new employees, being helpful supportive in the teaching of new associates. Complies with procedures and services, including QA guidelines, in consultation with the assigned laboratory supervisor. Performs technical procedures within specified turnaround time for assigned area. Is responsible for executing and monitoring technical practices of the department in order to meet necessary standards, recommendations and requirements of voluntary and government agencies (ie. CAP, JCAHO)
Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Phlebotomy course, Medical Assistant, Associate of Arts, preferred.
