Assist ophthalmologists by performing preliminary eye function tests, gathering patient medical histories, and preparing patients for examinations. Responsibilities also include scribing during exams, administering medications, and assisting with in-office procedures.
Candidates should be certified or uncertified ophthalmic assistants capable of performing standard and advanced ophthalmic measurements. Proficiency in maintaining electronic medical records and adhering to state and federal healthcare regulations is required.
Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history. May act as scribe while physician examines patient entering data into electronic medical records, oversees patient flow. Is able to take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity. Is able to perform lensometry, refractometry, applanation tonometry, basic muscle balance testing, assess pupils, assess the anterior chamber, confrontation visual fields and gross external exam. Administer diagnostic tests. Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician. Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures. Perform advanced ophthalmic procedures. Assists in training of other ophthalmic assistants. Assists with patient education. Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day. Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations. Understands and accepts responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to Manager or Compliance Officer. Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism. Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the clinic operates efficiently.
