JOB
SUMMARY: The nurse will attend to quality patient care in the pre-procedural and post-procedural settings before interventional radiology and interventional cardiology procedures, as well as overseeing nursing care of the patient during non-invasive cardiac procedures including transesophageal echocardiograms and cardioversion. The nurse will assist with patient pre-assessment and scheduling, obtaining required pre-procedural documentation and diagnostic tests, and obtaining IV access. The nurse will also facilitate intraprocedural assessment and monitoring, administration of conscious sedation to the patient during non-invasive cardiac procedures, and monitoring and recovery of cardiac catheterization laboratory and interventional radiology patients post procedurally. The pre/post procedure RN must be a patient care expert in all aspects of procedural preparation and recovery. Expertise and experience with vascular access sites is preferred. The nurse will oversee and monitor the patient for decompensation and complications before, during, and after cardiology and radiology procedures, administer medications and conscious sedation, and function cohesively and communicate effectively within the cardiology/radiology team.

RESPONSIBILITES: 1. Performs nursing assessments to gather data and identify the patient's needs in the realm of intraprocedural care. 2. Evaluates pre-procedural documentation and laboratory values and communicates effectively to physicians if necessary, requirements are not met. 3. Prepares patients efficiently for cath lab and interventional radiology procedures including establishing IV access, drawing blood for preoperative labs, performing EKG’s, vascular access site prep, performing admission documentation and patient history via preop call or upon the patient’s arrival. Assists in obtaining informed consent and ensuring other documentation required for the procedure is on the physical or digital chart. 4. Primary nursing care for patients undergoing transesophageal echocardiograms and electrical cardioversion. Monitors the patient’s vital signs, end tidal CO2 values, and administers medications for conscious sedation. Recovers patient to baseline. 5. Manages the care of patients postoperatively following cath lab and interventional radiology procedures. Demonstrates competency in pulling vascular sheaths, monitoring vascular access sites, early identification of complications, and communication to the physician to determine treatment and resolution. 6. Provides pre-procedural and discharge education to the patient and family members, maintaining empathy and professionalism at all times. 7. Performs pre-procedural patient phone calls to provide education and obtain patient history and communicate procedural scheduling details. 8. Collaborates with physicians and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate optimal patient care and outcomes. 9. Provides care based on established standards of practice, policies and protocols. 10. Demonstrates critical thinking skills and problem-solving ability to anticipate and respond to patient care needs.

Experience

Demonstrates the ability to function Knowledge of twelve lead EKG interpretation, interpretation of end tidal CO2 waveforms with clinical correlation, cardiac medications, emergency management of cardiac patients, ability to establish IV access in difficult patients, vascular access site management, and current clinical practice guidelines in cardiology. Experience administering conscious sedation is preferred.
