The Surgical Technologist creates and maintains a sterile field while providing necessary instrumentation and supplies during surgical procedures. They are responsible for patient flow, environmental asepsis, and maintaining accurate counts of sponges and needles.
Candidates must be graduates of an accredited Surgical Technology program and hold certification from NBSTSA or NCCT. CPR certification and 0-2 years of related experience are required.
Basic knowledge of aseptic technique. Ability to prepare and maintain a sterile field. Basic knowledge of surgical instrumentation. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Creates and maintains sterile field, anticipates and provides instrumentation and supplies necessary to perform surgery. Facilitates patient flow through case turnover. Performs environmental activities to maintain asepsis of operating room. Anticipates needs in instruments, sutures, sponges, and supplies according to technique procedure, and special requirements. Maintains correct sponge, needle, and instrument count with registered nurse and reports discrepancies as policy requires. Performs high level disinfection. Develops and demonstrates competency in specialty team cases and can serve as a preceptor. Demonstrates competencies in multiple specialties. Makes changes in surgeon's preference cards per surgeon requests to keep them current. Decision Making: Independent judgment in planning sequence of operations and making minor decisions in complex technical or professional field. Working Relationships: Works directly with patients and/or customers. Works with internal/external customers. Works with other healthcare professionals and staff. Works frequently with individuals at director level or above. Special Job Dimensions: Responds to and must take emergency call, if applicable.
