The Research Pharmacist manages investigational pharmaceutical care by evaluating and implementing research drug protocols. Responsibilities include the procurement, storage, and dispensing of study medications while ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
Candidates must be a Georgia licensed pharmacist with a Bachelor of Science or Pharm.D. and at least three years of pharmacy experience. Preferred qualifications include experience in oncology, sterile compounding, and knowledge of drug-related research guidelines.
As an integral member of the Pharmacy team, the IDS Pharmacist provides investigational pharmaceutical care services by evaluating, implementing, and maintaining research drug protocols within Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Ensures drug-related studies are conducted in compliance with established protocols, institutional policy and procedures, and state and federal regulations. Facilitates and manages investigational drug procurement, storage, distribution, destruction, inventory, and record keeping of pharmaceutical research. Works collaboratively with members of the research team, assumes education responsibilities, provides accurate and efficient dispensing of medication, performs administrative responsibilities, and maintains overall responsibility for pharmacy operations. Experience Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a pharmacist
Prior experience as a hospital pharmacist Prior experience as an investigational drug or oncology pharmacist Previous experience with sterile and hazardous drug compounding Prior knowledge of regulations and guidelines that govern the conduct of drug-related research Education Graduation from an accredited pharmacy school (Bachelor of Science or Pharm.D.) Certification Summary Georgia licensed pharmacist or eligible Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Institutional Review Board approved program which oversees protection of human subjects, e.g., Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) within 30 days of employment Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Comprehensive knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and therapeutics Robust critical thinking skills, effective communication skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision Strong interpersonal communication skills required for effective communication with PIs (Primary Investigators) and other healthcare providers Demonstrates commitment to service excellence by promptly addressing internal/external customer issues/requests, resolving concerns while maintaining a professional image and behavior to build and enhance the patient/family/customer experience. Exceptional analytical ability required to research and evaluate drug information, interpret patient monitoring parameters, and resolve problems related to study drugs Ability to master computer/software applications necessary for completing job tasks as required Job Responsibilities Reads, interprets, and processes orders for investigational drugs. Implements plan for medication management, including build in electronic health record and dose-dispensation software per protocol specifications. Develops pharmacy budgets related to study protocol requirements and routinely invoices for pharmacy services. Accurately dispenses medications and manages the preparation of sterile products, following proper aseptic and hazardous drug management technique. Reviews and maintains documentation of investigational pharmacy services for drug and drug-related research and updates documentation and processes as required per any protocol amendments. Reviews protocols for pharmacy feasibility and provides operational assessment and instruction. Works independently as the pharmacy leader during sponsor site visits, external and internal audits. Provides study drug related education and training for pharmacy, nursing, medical staff, patients, and families. Serves as a resource to Emory and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta physicians/investigators in the review and management of research protocols, including physician- initiated studies. Manages appropriate storage and handling of investigational product and response to temperature excursions. Attends and contributes to interdisciplinary team meetings relating to clinical investigational drug trials and may serve as member of clinical review teams. Maintains individual competences and professional development. Precepts pharmacy students and pharmacy residents. Performs other responsibilities as required.
