Job Summary

• Works within the Operating Rooms with surgeons, anesthetists, and surgical technicians.
• Communicates with surgeon and anesthesiologist continuously, and as needed, about patient conditions; receives direction for patient management.
• Is responsible for patient care and charting during procedures.
• Also works in ancillary departments such as PACU, same-day surgery, and endoscopy.
• Assists with room turnovers and setup to help improve workflow if needed.
• On-call is required with a 20-minute response (housing accommodations are provided if needed).

Duties and Responsibilities

• Approaches the patient in a kind, gentle, and friendly manner
• Gives patient explanations and verbal reassurances consistently
• Responds to the patient’s inappropriate behavior in a therapeutic manner
• Demonstrates knowledge of perioperative factors that alter the immediate postoperative phase
• Utilizes nursing procedures as a medium for communication and interaction with the patient
• Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action promptly
• Completes treatments as ordered or within one (1) hour, if appropriate
• Demonstrates knowledge of airway management and procedures and the ability to use the equipment
• Demonstrates ability to assess cardio-respiratory systems for changes and provides appropriate treatment
• Observes behavioral and physiologic changes due to medications, takes appropriate actions, and documents
• Adjusts and acts upon expectations of the patient’s behavior, according to the effect medication has on the patient
• Demonstrates ability to provide specific care to postoperative neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
• Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures
• Carries out established techniques for safe administration of medications and parenteral fluids, according to hospital policies and procedures
• Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors
• Carries out safety measures to prevent the patient from harming him/herself or others
• Coordinates patient care; gives explanations and teaching to patient/family, as necessary
• Protects patients’ sensitivities and right to privacy.

Professional Requirements

• Ensures that appearance and personal conduct are professional at all times
• Excellent attendance record.
• Wears appropriate clothing for job functions. Wears ID badge
• Works at maintaining a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, administration, and staff.
• Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
• Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.

Regulatory Requirements

• Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Utah.
• Current BLS certification.
• Current PALS certification.
• Current ACLS certification.
