Assists with the technical aspects of wet-lab processes, specifically the preparation of protein, metabolite, and lipid samples for mass spectrometry analysis. Responsible for data collection, solution preparation, equipment maintenance, and general laboratory cleaning.
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with a preference for an associate or bachelor's degree and one year of laboratory experience. Candidates should ideally have experience in proteomics, mass spec sample preparation, and the ability to follow Standard Operating Protocols.

The Mass Spectrometry Technology Access Center (MTAC) at WashU in St. Louis has an opening available for highly motivated applicants for the position of Research Technician I. The MTAC is a newly created recharge facility within the McDonnell Genome Institute (MGI) serving regional, national, and worldwide researchers for their Mass spectrometry needs. This position assists with the technical aspects of wet-lab processes including documentation and preparation of mass spectrometry samples following well established Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs). The Research Technician I is responsible for the preparation of protein samples for proteomics analysis or extract metabolites/lipid for metabolomics applications.
Job Description: Primary
Assists the investigator or higher-level technician with research studies, experiments and assays, including collection of data, preparation of solutions and setup and maintenance of equipment. Maintains files on research and assists with data entry. Assists with general lab maintenance and cleaning. Performs other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals. Associate or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) and 1 year of experience in a laboratory setting or equivalent. Proteomics or mass spec sample preparation experience. Experience with proteomics/metabolomics research studies, experiments and assays including preparation of solutions, protein digestion using trypsin, and desalting. Ability to understand and follow SOPs. Basic math calculation for making lab solvents. Understanding of data entry, as well as the management/integrity of data. Comfortable with use of Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows environment. Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate effectively with the supervisor as well as co-workers. Should have troubleshooting skills, an ability to maintain complete and organized records, and a working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment. Multitasking skills are highly desired.
