The CSFA assists surgeons during procedures with tasks such as suturing, hemostasis, and retraction while maintaining the sterile field. They are responsible for managing surgical instruments and equipment and supporting quality improvement initiatives.
Candidates must have a high school diploma, completion of an accredited surgical first assistant program, and CSFA certification from NBSTSA or NCCT. A minimum of 5 years of experience as a surgical technologist, including 1 year as a surgical first assistant and BLS certification, is required.
High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of an accredited surgical first assistant program (including didactic and clinical practicum) with certification as a Surgical First Assistant or completion of a surgical first assistant program meeting the minimal requirements of the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting. Certified Surgical First Assistant Certification (CSFA) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or have been employed to practice surgical technology before September 1, 2009. 5+ years’ experience as a surgical technologist, including 1+ year of current operating room experience as a surgical first assistant. BLS certification must be obtained within 14 days of hire or transfer into the role and prior to providing direct patient care.
