Pagosa Springs Medical Center (PSMC) is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Phlebotomist to join our Laboratory team. This position is responsible for performing blood collections and specimen procurement services for patients across all age groups while supporting laboratory operations through specimen processing, waived-complexity testing, quality control activities, and laboratory support functions. The Phlebotomist works closely with patients, providers, nursing staff, and laboratory personnel to ensure accurate specimen collection, processing, and testing. The ideal candidate is patient-focused, highly organized, and committed to providing excellent customer service while maintaining specimen integrity and laboratory quality standards. Schedule Highlights Full-time position (40 hours/week) Schedule may include: Days Evenings Weekends Holidays Rotating shifts may be required based on department needs Key Responsibilities Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection Perform venipuncture and specimen collection using appropriate collection techniques Verify patient identity using approved patient identifiers Review laboratory orders to ensure appropriate specimen collection Maintain specimen integrity through proper handling, labeling, accessioning, and transport Collect specimens from patients across all age groups, including: Neonate Pediatric Adolescent Adult Geriatric Laboratory Operations Process patient specimens for testing Evaluate specimen quality and integrity Follow specimen rejection criteria when appropriate Process reference laboratory testing requests Assist with laboratory workflow and specimen management Respond promptly to STAT testing requests Quality & Compliance Perform and document required quality control activities Participate in proficiency testing and competency programs Follow CLIA, COLA, laboratory, and organizational standards Support quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory Maintain accurate laboratory documentation Patient Care & Customer Service Educate patients regarding specimen collection procedures Communicate effectively with patients, providers, and staff Provide compassionate, professional care during specimen collection Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance Laboratory Support Restock phlebotomy supplies and collection areas Assist with inventory management and supply monitoring Support laboratory record management and report distribution Assist with departmental administrative and clerical functions as needed Participate in ongoing laboratory training and competency activities QualificationsEducation High school diploma or equivalent required Experience Previous phlebotomy experience strongly preferred but not required Healthcare experience preferred but not required Certifications Current AHA BLS certification for Healthcare Providers required Phlebotomy certification strongly preferred but not required ASCP certification preferred but not required Skills Strong phlebotomy and specimen collection skills Ability to distinguish colors accurately Strong attention to detail and specimen integrity Basic computer skills, including: Microsoft Office Electronic health records Laboratory information systems Excellent communication and customer service skills Ability to multitask and prioritize work effectively Ability to remain calm in fast-paced and stressful situations What We Are Looking For The ideal candidate will: Demonstrate exceptional patient care and professionalism Be committed to accuracy and quality Thrive in a fast-paced healthcare environment Work well independently and as part of a team Adapt to changing priorities and workload demands Embody PSMC's WISER values: Wholeness, Integrity, Stewardship, Excellence, and Respect Compensation & Benefits Base Compensation Range: $18.00 - $22.38 hourly, based on years of relevant experience. "Relevant experience" means relevant to the employee's responsibilities set forth in the job description as determined by the HR Manager, CAO, applicable department manager/director and applicable senior leader.
