Job Duties
Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions
Coordinate with surgeons to understand procedure-specific needs and ensure all necessary supplies and equipment are available
Conduct preoperative patient assessments, verify surgical site and procedure with the surgical team, and assist with patient positioning
Maintain aseptic techniques and actively monitor the sterile field throughout surgical procedures

Communicate effectively with the surgical team to ensure a smooth and efficient operation
Monitor and anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide instruments and supplies promptly
Manage the proper function of surgical equipment and instruments, reporting any malfunctions to the appropriate personnel
Ensure proper handling and labeling of specimens collected during surgery for laboratory analysis
Implement safety protocols to protect the patient, including verification of surgical site and patient identity
Administer medications and solutions as required under the supervision of the anesthesiologist or surgeon
Document perioperative care accurately in the patient’s medical record, including any medication given and the patient's response
Oversee the environmental control of the operating room, including temperature, humidity, and lighting
Assist with the transfer of patients to the recovery area and provide a report to the receiving staff
Participate in post-operative debriefing

Qualifications
Current RN (Registered Nurse) license in the state of practice
BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) Certification preferred
Minimum of one year experience as an OR circulator in an acute care setting
Thorough understanding of sterile techniques and surgical procedures
Ability to function in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
Capable of making quick and accurate decisions
Proficient in the use of electronic health record systems
Knowledge of operating room standards and practices
Physical stamina to stand for long periods and assist in lifting and positioning patients
Availability to work flexible hours, including on-call, nights, weekends, and holidays
Ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals
Commitment to continuing education and staying current with advancements in perioperative nursing practices
Physical Requirements
May be expected to lift up to 50 pounds or up to 150 pounds with assistance. May be expected to push or pull 150-300 pounds with assistance
Work is of medium demand; walking or standing most of the time while on duty
Visual and auditory acuity and manual dexterity essential to performing designated duties required
Optimal auditory acuity required
Able to look at a computer screen for long periods of time
Manual dexterity involving the handling of equipment and instruments or needles is essential to performing assigned duties
Physical conditions are clean, neat and well lit
May be subjected to unpleasant sights and odors, stressful situations and hazardous or infectious agents where judgment as to precautions needed to be taken is essential. Climate control and ambient temperature variances may be experienced and required by patient care and needs of the surgical team
Exposure to limited amounts of radiation, hazardous chemicals or substances and infectious disease processes are a possibility
Hours of duty may be irregular or unexpectedly extended due to the requirements of the daily surgical and clinic schedule
