The Medical Scribe is responsible for real-time transcription of patient encounters and maintaining accurate medical records for ophthalmologists and optometrists. They also provide administrative support and may assist with patient care as directed by the physician.
A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and completion of a medical scribe training program is desired. Candidates should be familiar with electronic medical record software and possess strong typing skills.
The Medical Scribe is a valuable member of the eye care team, primarily responsible for assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in documenting patient encounters and ensuring accurate medical records. Their role involves real-time transcription and administrative support during clinical visits. Scribes may assist with patient care as directed by the physician. These duties may include those of an Ophthalmic Assistant and/ or Technician. Roles and Responsibilities Document patients accurately and efficiently in electronic health records (EHR) or other designated systems, capturing medical history, chief complaints, examination findings, and treatment plans. Strong typing and data entry skills with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of patient records by reviewing documentation for inconsistencies, missing information, and proper coding. Prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are properly equipped with necessary instruments, supplies, and patient education materials. Adhere to legal and regulatory requirements, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability) guidelines, to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy. Collaborate closely with ophthalmologists/optometrists to transcribe and enter information via verbal or written communication into patient records, ensuring clarity, coherence, and adherence to established protocols. Demonstrate knowledge of medical coding and billing processes. May perform other duties as necessary Experience Requirements Completion of a medical scribe training program or previous experience as a medical scribe is preferred but not required. Familiarity with medical practice management and electronic medical record software Education Requirements High school diploma or GED preferred IJCAHPO’s Ophthalmic Scribe Certification preferred but not required Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
