The Genetic Counselor provides access to quality care for patients and families at risk for cancer, assisting them through the continuum of care. This includes conducting individual cancer risk assessment sessions and discussing genetic testing procedures and implications.
The job requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team and the ability to assist patients in understanding their genetic risks. Strong communication skills and a compassionate approach are essential.
The Oncology Clinical Genetics Nurse Navigator (NN)/Genetic Counselor (GC) functions to provide access to quality care for patients and families at risk for cancer. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, this provider assists patients along the continuum of care from exploration of familial risk, diagnosis of genetic risk, high-risk physical findings, prevention strategies, diagnosis and through treatment and survivorship. The NN/GC meets with patients and family members for individual cancer risk assessment sessions; including detailed discussion of basic genetics, risk for cancer development based on family/personal history, discussion of genetic testing procedures and possible test results, and medical management implications of genetic test results.
