This role involves supporting gastroenterology providers by assessing patients, collecting clinical data, providing procedural education, and assisting with chronic GI condition management. Key duties include coordinating tests, triaging concerns, and ensuring seamless patient flow through clinical support.
Candidates must possess an active CMA certification for Iowa and ideally have a minimum of two years of clinical or gastroenterology experience. Essential requirements include strong communication, critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to explain complex medical instructions clearly.
About Us Iowa Digestive Disease Center and Iowa Endoscopy Center are proud to serve the community and surrounding area with regard to digestive health needs. Our endoscopy center is one of only three centers in Iowa recognized by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy is known as the leader in setting standards for excellence in gastrointestinal endoscopy and has designed the only national program recognizing quality and safety in the practice of gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Our center has also been accredited by the AAAHC, having met their rigorous quality and safety standards. AAAHC accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to meeting certain performance standards. Our board-certified physicians specialize in: Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Diagnostic Endoscopy, Therapeutic Endoscopy, Infusion, and Advanced Therapeutics.
Education Requirements High school graduate or equivalent is required Active CMA for the state of Iowa is required Two (2) year minimum experience within a clinical setting and/or gastroenterology preferred
Assess patients and review medical history, current medications, and presenting GI symptoms Educate patients on diagnostic procedures (e.g., colonoscopy, EGD), prep instructions, and post-procedure expectations Provide guidance on managing chronic GI conditions (e.g., IBS, GERD, Crohn’s, ulcerative colitis) Coordinate necessary labs, imaging, or diagnostic tests as ordered by the provider. Monitor patient vitals and assess clinical status during clinic visits Conduct telephone triage, addressing patient concerns and escalating to providers when appropriate Support physicians with in-clinic procedures (e.g., hemorrhoid banding, anoscopy) when applicable Provide discharge education and reinforce follow-up care plans after appointments or infusion visits Ensure accurate and timely documentation in the EMR of assessments, interventions, and patient education Collaborate with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care Follow infection control protocols and maintain clean, well-stocked exam and infusion rooms.
