The technologist provides treatment, management, and diagnostic testing for patients with sleep and wake disorders by analyzing, monitoring, and recording physiologic data during sleep and wakefulness. Key duties include performing therapeutic and diagnostic use of positive airway pressure devices and generating detailed reports summarizing sleep stages and various clinical events.
Candidates must meet California Medical Board requirements for PSGT licensees or Respiratory Care Board requirements for RCP licensees, along with holding a current BLS certification. A minimum of 2 years of recent experience is typically required, along with knowledge of cardio respiratory function, sleep physiology, and medical electronics.
Analyzes the polysomnogram, identifying normal/abnormal patterns and artifacts; and generates a report that accurately summarizes the patients' sleep stages, respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousal analysis, and other clinical events. Assists with clerical work such as answering phones, making charts, updating the database, registering patients. Assists with set-up and break-down of alert, well, and keeping energetic (AWAKE) meetings. Participates in research projects and expansion projects upon request. Performs special procedures such as multiple sleep latency testing, nocturnal penile tumescence, infant/pediatric polysomnograms, ambulatory monitoring, and patient education. Performs Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Tests (MWT), Nocturnal Penile Tumescence (NPT), and CO2 studies when indicated. Provides equipment t.roubleshooting including uses of filters to correct various artifacts, including sweat, 60 Hz, electrode popping, and Electrocardiogram (EKG), on the tracings. Corrects signal malfunctions from patient to computer using a digital multi-meter or equipment switching method. Corrects errors generated from the computer such as disk full, power failure, montage and calibration errors. Provides patient assessments pre and post study. Relaxes patients prior to using invasive and non-invasive respiratory assisted devices and titrates appropriately according to protocol and physician orders. Reviews patient charts and questionnaires for potential equipment and medical problems. Identifies atypical occurrences or change in patient condition or behavior, modifies testing as needed, documents in the chart and notifies the physician. Sterilizes equipment. Organizes materials such as equipment cables, supplies and equipment. Cleans sleep center facility as needed EDUCATION: Meets Medical Board of California requirements for PSGT licensees or meets Respiratory Care Board of California requirements for respiratory care practitioner program for RCP licensees CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE: BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider PSGT-Polysomnographic Technologist from Medical Board of California OR RCP-Respiratory Care Practitioner TYPICAL EXPERIENCE: 2 years of recent experience. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of cardio respiratory function, sleep physiology and neurology. Understanding of physics, medical electronics, in-depth medical terminology, with emphasis on pulmonology, neurology, and sleep related pharmacology; and psychological processes related to sleep/wake disturbances. Basic computer skills are essential for record analysis. Proven verbal and written skills. Ability to perform Polysomnographic studies.
