Prepares and stains cytologic material and evaluates results for validity to diagnose carcinoma or other conditions. Assists pathologists and radiologists with fine needle aspiration biopsy procedures and provides adequacy assessments.
Requires a bachelor's degree in medical technology or biological sciences and CT (ASCP) certification. At least two years of experience is required, with a preference for gynecological, non-gynecological, and FNA cytology experience.
Bachelors degree in medical technology, clinical lab science or a chemical, physical or biological science. Other bachelors degree will be accepted if graduated from an accredited school of cytotechnology or if science and math coursework meet requirement of certifying agency. Education Exception: Bachelors degree may be waived for a cytotechnolgist who was ASCP certified in the years prior to the bachelors degree requirement by ASCP and a HEW/HHS technologist certified by Health and Human Services. At least two years of experience. Experience in Gynecological, Non-gynecological and FNA cytology preferred. Certification as CT (ASCP) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Additional Details PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs, 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs, 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking, Occasional sitting, Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing), Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks. Environmental exposures include, but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock , Floor Surfaces, Hot/Cold Temperatures, Indoor/Outdoor conditions, Latex, Lighting, Patient care/handling injuries, Radiation , Shift work, Travel may be required. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
