The RN First Assist assists the surgeon in performing safe operations by carrying out independent nursing behaviors such as perioperative assessment and post-operative evaluation, practicing inter-departmentally with the surgeon. Responsibilities include assisting with surgical procedures like controlling bleeding and suturing, positioning the patient, monitoring vital signs, and educating the patient and family.
Candidates must be a Licensed Registered Professional Nurse (RN) in Illinois and obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days. Required education includes a Certificate of Completion or College Diploma in Nursing, along with prior work experience in surgical services nursing.
The RN First Assist will carry out the functions to assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. The RNFA practices perioperative nursing and is therefore responsible for independent nursing behaviors of perioperative assessment and post-operative evaluation of care. The intra-operative practice of the RNFA is inter-department with the surgeon. The RNFA practices independently of the roles, duties, and responsibilities of a circulating nurse or surgical technologist.
